Letter, Land, Lore

The convergence of Jewish Mysticism and Indigenous culture

“Twenty-two foundation letters: (s)He engraved them, (s)He carved them, (s)He permuted them, (s)He weighed them,(s)He transformed them, And with them, (s)He depicted all that was formed and all that would be formed.”

Sefer Yetzirah (The Book of Creation)  2:2

Blossoming SERIES

Artist’s Statement

The resulting series of work, Letter, Land, Lore encapsulates the marriage of these worlds. It explores the parallels between Hebrew letters, native Australian wildflowers, and the medicinal values embodied in both letter and flower. The twenty two letters exhibited here have been hand-printed on paper from carved lino blocks in a limited edition of eighteen. In the work titled ‘Preichah: Blossoming WA’ I have physically incorporated the native plants around my local environment, by extracting their natural dyes. I used the twenty two carved lino blocks to print on the resulting range of hand dyed papers, combining them together to form an artist book. Other artworks have been created digitally and printed on canvas, layering macro and landscape photography with selected individual letters to form words that exemplify the holistic nature of this exhibition, and its timely opening concurrent with the lead up to the Jewish New Year.
